Lower Division General Education Requirements

If you are unsure of your major, concentrate first on completing lower division general education requirements. These courses are transferable and meet admission requirements. Taking general education courses is a good way to learn about the various disciplines and help you decide on a major.

As a lower division transfer student, you should concentrate on meeting the highest-priority general education requirements in the English language - oral communications, English composition, and critical thinking - along with a general education course in mathematics. You can certainly take other general education courses, but these courses should be your first priority.

Each California Community College has a list of courses that can be used to meet CSU lower division general education requirements. Or, go to degrees.calstate.edu to obtain a list of courses at the CCC campus(es) you are attending. While completion of all general education requirements is not required for admission, it is important to complete as many of the lower division general education requirements as possible prior to transfer. If you are pursuing a high-unit major that requires extensive lower division prerequisites you may not be able to complete all lower division general education requirements prior to transfer. Speak with your counselor to understand which classes you should take.

CSU provides California Community College transfers with two systemwide options for fulfilling CSU lower division general education requirements: CSU General Education Breadth and the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum. You should explore both programs in the links to the right. Then you can discuss with your college counselor which program is best for you.

Generally, CSU campuses urge transfer students to complete all lower division general education and premajor courses prior to transfer.
